The truth about the cow near the road/temple/station
I have often observed old ladies putting up their cows near railway station, at the entrance of the temple or near bus stop in Mumbai, in the hope that people will feed them in exchange of cash.
In Mumbai, each individual carries so much of guilt that he is drawn to these cows to feed them so that his sins are absolved. But then, Mumbaikar need not be so guilty after all, since feeding cow itself has a good economics behind it. The information presented here, can be verified by asking the lady herself as I did.
First of all BMC has made it illegal to keep the cows on the road, for simple reason that it blocks the passage of people. With around 2 Cr population in Mumbai, the roads are pretty much jammed and cows present in such a crowded area represent a grave danger to the sanitation of the area due to mishandling of cow dunk.
Now, lets turn our attention to the cow in question, the cow is not owned by the lady, its ownership lies at the hands of the owner of the barn where cow goes at the end of the day. The lady pays the rent of the cow on a daily basis. (That was a news to me, I was always feeling sad about the life of the lady and the cow both coming to the shelter of the road), Also, the lady passes a part of the daily sales to the owner as commission. The daily sales comprises of the grass and feed we give to the cow in exchange of money paid. The current rate is Rs. 10 for grass. The remaining part after payment of commission belongs to the lady for her daily expense.
Here comes the best part, the owner, milks the cow at the end of the day, the cow provides anywhere between 10-15 litre milk. Hence the owner is happy as he gets a well fed cow and free milk which is a bonus. The milk is sold through the normal channel, and might reach the my cup of tea the next morning as prasad! :)The authorities might catch the cow, but the "setting" works.
In all these, I guess the real winner is the owner of the cow, who earns free milk and well fed cow (& cow's blessings!!), the looser is you and me who are really paying a huge fee for god's mercy. Its better to carry guilt and pray to the gods whole heartedly than to feed a cow on the road.
